This is still the most frightening book you’ve ever read.

I had this book and the second installment when I was young. The stories and illustrations (especially the illustrations) formed the basis for every nightmare I’ve ever had.

Fun Fact: Illustrator Stephen Gammell normally didn’t do such gruesome artwork. Most of his children’s book art is whimsical and light.

I’m feeling very Mary Poppins-esque right now, only instead of “Let’s go fly a kite!” it’d more “Let’s go fly a plane because I desperately need an adventure!’ I do so love airports and travel.
